Position Summary: Reporting to the Vice President of Development, the Managing Director of Development will provide leadership and direction to a team of development officers and develop and implement strategies that will lead to a high-performance fundraising culture and results that are based on the principles of donor centricity, and commitment to the Foundation’s mission and beliefs.
The Managing Director will provide leadership and strategic direction to the fundraising efforts for a unit-based development team, manage a select portfolio of prospective and ongoing relationships, and develop and implement successful institutional strategies, working effectively and collaboratively with campus partners.
The Managing Director of Development will travel nationally to cultivate and solicit leadership and major gifts.
He/she will develop and implement solicitation strategies aimed at building and developing relationships with new and existing donors to achieve goals specific to his/her portfolio.
He/she will focus on initiating, building, and sustaining beneficial relationships that align with the University mission.
Partners with NDSU administration to identify fundraising priorities, execute strategies and campaigns to meet the goals of the university’s strategic vision and mission.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Team Management and Leadership Maintain staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees, developing personal growth opportunities.
Facilitate team results by coaching and counseling employees; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results; conducting training; implementing and enforcing systems, policies, and procedures.
Guide work plans for development staff Deliver annual performance reviews and conduct frequent performance check-ins throughout the year Direct Fundraising Develop, implement, and evaluate strategic plans focused on securing leadership ($1M+) and major ($25k+) gifts.
Utilize comprehensive prospect management and research system to assist in implementation of strategic plans and other actions.
Manage an assigned portfolio of 50-75 constituents including, alumni, friends, companies, and charitable foundations in collaboration with university leadership, and fellow gift officers, staff, and leadership of the North Dakota State University Foundation.
This includes initiating contacts with potential leadership and major gift donors; develop appropriate cultivation strategies, including working with volunteers, campus partners and other development officers; moving potential donors in an appropriate and timely fashion toward solicitation and closure; stewarding donors.
Establish and foster long-term partnerships and strengthen existing relationships that will maximize fundraising production and enhance donor relations to support University priorities Other duties as assigned Essential Functions: Set priorities, develop a work schedule, monitor progress towards goals, and track details/data/information/activities.
Efficiently operate a personal computer and associated software (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.
) Maintain files accurately, in paper and in software programs Maintain donor records and prepare contact reports Handle multiple tasks simultaneously Prioritize and meet deadlines Establish and maintain positive working relationships with others both internally and externally to achieve the goals of the organization.
Interact in an effective and appropriate manner with diverse populations, internal staff, University community and the public Work cooperatively and effectively with others to resolve problems and make decisions that enhance organizational effectiveness.
Maintain confidentiality of records and information Display excellent judgment and decision making Follow through on projects with little supervision Identify and address problems Speak, listen, and write in a clear, thorough, and timely manner using appropriate and effective communication tools and techniques.
Prompt and reliable attendance Demonstrate support of the Foundation’s mission and beliefs Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree Minimum of four years in major, planned, or leadership gift development Experience in creating and executing strategic plans Previous supervisory experience Strong analytical skills High level of integrity, dependability, and sound judgment Excellent organizational and project management skills Excellent attention to details, professionalism, and a strong work ethic Demonstrated leadership and/or management skills and a history of professional growth within an organization Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively, effectively and politely with diverse audiences Excellent communication and writing skills, including demonstrated ability to absorb information on a variety of topics and communicate it to other Ability to evaluate problems accurately and display sound and confidential judgment Proficiency with technology including Microsoft Office products Willingness and ability to travel Preferred Qualifications: Master’s or other advanced degree Five or more years in major gift, planned gift, leadership development or similar comparable professional experience that would lend to transferable skills Strong background in a higher education environment from an institutionally-related foundation setting Proficiency with Raiser’s Edge/NXT or similar database programs Experience with and a comprehensive understanding of fundraising principles and practices Demonstrated success managing a team CFRE certification or similar professional certification designation Physical and Mental Demands: Constantly operates a computer/smartphone/tablet.
Regularly required to maintain a stationary position, move about the office, determine what others have said or written, critical thinking and converse with others and exchange accurate information.
Regularly required to sit, stand, bend, reach, and move about the office and within the community.
May also include occasional bending, stooping, squatting, and/or pushing and pulling or moving objects.
Occasionally required to move, raise, reach and/or retrieve binders, books, boxes, and files up to ten (10) pounds.
